Transfer of knowledge: Volunteer teaches children, ocean protection
In order to protect the marine ecological environment, China Environmental Protection Foundation and TPI Group jointly launched the "TPI Coastal Guard Fund", which aims to carry out ecological education and public welfare activities around marine ecological protection.
In 2022, TPIPLASTIC Coastal Guard Fund joining hands with China Guanghua Science and Technology Foundation, Xiamen State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science（MEL), and 70.8 Marine Media Lab carried out series of courses on marine ecological protection&sustainability, beach-cleaning relay race, painting competitions etc.. These activities are designed to pass on the knowledge of environmental protection, boost people's awareness of marine protection, make children understand the harm of ocean plastics.

After the announcement of the online education campaign, 3,026 college students from 47 universities, including Xiamen University, China Ocean University, Zhejiang Ocean University, Nanjing University and Shanghai Ocean University, participated in the marine ecology and environmental protection education campaign as college student volunteers. Meanwhile, 3,272 elementary school students from 65 elementary schools, including Dingjiaqiao Elementary School attached to Nanjing University, Linyi Fuzhuang Middle School in Luozhuang District, Linyi City, Longtan Township Longtan Complete Elementary School in Yangbi Yi Autonomous County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yilin Elementary School in Yanta District, Xi'an City, and Wangdu County Chengnei Elementary School in Baoding City, received one-on-one online tutoring from college student volunteers.
In order for the college student volunteers to teach primary school students more effectively, Dr. Wu Haohao and Zhou Tian from Xiamen University were invited to conduct online training and explain the course and teaching skills for the college students.
The university student volunteers prepared and taught carefully according to the online training content, PPT and handouts of the theme course, and conducted one-on-one lessons with the children online to promote marine conservation knowledge. The students listened attentively to the lecture, actively asked questions, and completed their homework after the lesson.
Under the guidance of volunteers, the students designed posters on marine pollution prevention, completed review questions of warming, and collected information on possible threats to the survival of marine life. This activity helped the elementary school students to enhance their understanding of marine ecological and environmental protection, pass on knowledge about it, arouse their awareness of environment protection.
After the event, we received good feedback from the university volunteers and elementary school students who participated in the interaction. The university student volunteers took the role of teachers to pass on their knowledge and learned teaching skills and ocean-related knowledge, which enriched their holiday life. The elementary school students learned about marine ecological protection and gained a deeper understanding of the plight facing the ocean through the course.
In mid to late September, the next phase of the Marine Conservation Series will continue with offline marine ecology and environmental protection education activities, with "Plastic Reduction" and "Marine Conservation" as the main topics. Besides, Coastal clean-up campaign was organized for elementary school students in Guangzhou, combined with marine garbage recycling to convey the knowledge of marine protection.
Youth is the hope of the country and the future of the nation. Improving the environmental literacy level of young students is of great importance to the youth of today to build awareness of ecological protection, practice the concept of ecological civilization and promote the spirit of ecological civilization.
